A Terrible "First"

I recently had a new first experience. (Disclaimer: this is a really long story! But maybe slightly amusing.)

Let me give some background as to why it was more terrible than it would ordinarily be. There are a few times each year at work that are more insanely busy than usual - Parent/Teacher Conferences and Home Visits. We have lots of paper to get done before we can have them, and then there’s the actual scheduling and time to fit them all in.

So I show up to work one ordinary day (during home visit time) and notice one of the morning teachers’ cars isn’t in the parking lot. Weird because she NEVER misses work! Turns out she was sick and the afternoon teacher, Connie, who I work with was taking her place in the classroom. So I was given the chance to fill in for Connie’s scheduled visit and do my first home visit on my own that morning. No big deal. I thought I could handle that.

I drive the 15 minutes it takes to get the house in Hibbard, and I decide to leave my purse in the car since I already have papers and stuff to carry and wouldn’t need it anyway.

I go in and spend close to an hour doing the home visit. When I leave, my keys aren’t in my pocket, and the mom has already gone ahead to show me the way out. I pause, feel around in all of my pockets, and then turn back to check for them on the couch and around where I was sitting. There’s no sign of them so I follow her out to the door. Feeling totally unprofessional and a bit panicky, I tell her my keys aren’t in my pocket, but I’m sure they must be by my car or something. Maybe they fell out of my lap when I stood up.

I walk out to my car and don’t see them. All the cars doors are locked. What to do, what to do? I go back and tell her, and she helps me search around the couch for my keys. I check the path between the house and where I parked. Nothing. I look in all of my car windows to see if I can spot them. I could swear there’s no possible way I left them in the car. But really, where on earth could they be?

I don’t really want to go back in and admit that my keys must be locked in my car, but it’s the middle of February in Rexburg (so pretty much the dead of winter still) and I can’t just hang out by my car. I finally go back in and she says I can stay there until I figure something out. I text Joshua. He’s in class and doesn’t write back, but it’s not like he could do much for me anyway since I have the car. I try calling Rose, my manager. I’m not sure what I’ll tell her, but she doesn’t answer anyway. I try calling my co-worker, Lacey, the only other one who might answer her phone right now. Nope.

The lady whose house I’m at finds a wire coat hanger so we can try to break into my car. Neither of us know what we’re doing and obviously none of my car windows are cracked (remember it’s still the middle of winter). We quickly give up and go back inside.

She apologizes for not being able to drive me back to work. Her van is in the shop, and her husband has their other car at school. She would at least offer to take me back when she drops her daughter off for school, but she’ll be late since they have to wait for her husband to be done with class. I’m the teacher. I can’t be late for school.

I try calling Rose and Lacey again. Nothing. The mom has Rhonda, our cook’s, kitchen phone number so she tries calling her. She answers! Rhonda finds Rose and Rose says she’ll send Lacey over to pick me up after she’s done with the home visit that she’s on. (The house I'm at is essentially in the middle of nowhere…Lacey is the only other person who knows where it is since you can’t even google the address.)

In total I spend an hour after my home visit ended hanging out at this house. I spend the whole time feeling totally awkward and stupid.

Lacey calls me when she gets there, and as I go out I can see that Lacey’s laughing before I even get in her car. She tells me it happens to everybody, but I insist that it’s never happened to me before! I get back to work just in time for the afternoon class. Naturally everybody laughs at me. Connie thinks it would have been more worth our time for her to reschedule that home visit so I could have stayed and done paperwork. She’s absolutely right.

I leave both Joshua and Ryan, our friend who continually helps us out in times of need, messages on their phones. While I’m at work they talk and figure it out. Since Joshua has to stay at school for classes and tutoring, Ryan picks up Joshua’s keys and picks me up after work. He drives me forever out to the house where our car is, and waits to make sure I can get in.

Sure enough, I find my keys in our car! (Good thing because otherwise I’d have NO clue where they ended up!) Apparently I dropped my keys in my purse before getting out and before I decided at the last minute I had no need for my purse. Good one.

Let’s just say I won’t be making that same mistake anytime soon! I make sure my keys are on my person before locking that door and closing it.

The Plague

At the beginning of this month I contracted the plague. Seriously.

One Friday I woke up really congested. Sunday night some weird stuff started coming out of my eye. I knew it wasn't natural, but couldn't place it. My left ear started to hurt. And of course I was still congested. I called Clarissa, one of the morning teachers, to see if she could cover for me the next day if I needed to stay home. She said she could, but the thought of missing work still made me feel bad.

I woke up in the middle of the night, stumbled to the bathroom, and it dawned on me, "Oh, I have pink eye." In both eyes. Really bad. And a terrible ear infection. (It was probably 2 in the morning and we Lysol-ed the entire apartment right then. I'm paranoid. And we can't afford for Joshua to get sick this semester!)

No work for Shavonne. Or sleep. I couldn't fall back to sleep after waking up again around 5. When I called in sick for work, Rose told me I sounded terrible. Encouraging right? It took the doctor about 2 seconds of looking at me to say, "Your eyes are really red. You definitely have pink eye." Ya think? Because that and all the gunk coming out of my eyes hadn't tipped me off to that. Sometimes I wish we didn't have to pay doctors so much money just to tell us what we already know. Then he looked in my ear for 2 seconds to confirm that I had a really nasty ear infection. At least I left the doctor's with two prescriptions and orders to also take Ibuprofen.

I spent a couple days curled up in bed resting and watching movies. And thankfully Joshua takes good care of me. :) He even bought me a stuffed baby Eeyore! (Partly because I'm sick and partly because it was near Valentine's Day and all the flowers they're selling are roses - not the other kinds I would ordinarily prefer. Either way it made me really happy.)

However, when I'm sick and Joshua's incredibly busy with school we apparently don't take care of our apartment:

That part's a little embarrassing, but also kind of funny to me for some reason. And I probably shouldn't point this out, but that's only one kitchen counter. And it also doesn't account for all of the plastic cups and paper plates we've been using. Oh well.

Though I made it back to work after only a couple days, I'm still totally drained after work. And totally sick. (Pink eye wants to be my new best friend.) Our apartment is a lost cause for now and that's alright. I have the plague. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

Harry Potter

So I just spent about 3 months reading all of the Harry Potter books.

Back in the day I'd read the first 3 1/2 (not sure how I stopped in the middle of the fourth one!) and enjoyed them, but obviously didn't care enough to keep reading them. I've always figured I would love them if I read them.

Joshua loves the Harry Potter books. They were what got him to really start reading and realize that reading is awesome! I hadn't really seen the movies before and since getting married we'd watched a couple. During the fifth movie we seriously had to pause it every five minutes for Joshua to explain to me what was going on. I didn't enjoy it very much. I wanted all of the background and more details! So I was delighted when Joshua's mom sent us his set of the books.

I loved them!
Rowling is so clever. I love all the little details, and she does such a good job of wrapping up all of the different story lines and connecting it all. I think she's brilliant!

Joshua had been dying to see the seventh movie, but we wanted to wait until I'd read the book. Let's just say you really can't compare the books to the movies. If you do, you will be severely disappointed. I promise. That's something I've always had a problem with. I love reading so much and books are always a million times better than the movies. The movie was pretty good. I think it could definitely be improved though. They spend so much time making silly little things really dramatic, and then they don't spend time developing things that would benefit your understanding of the story line. I feel bad for people who watch the movies and haven't read the books. I don't understand how they enjoy them. They don't make nearly as much sense without already knowing what's going on. Oh well. Obviously people like them and I'm just a crazy book lover.

Now we're going to watch all of the movies in order! We already watched the first two. They make me kind of mad sometimes. I understand having to change things to turn into a cohesive movie. But really...they add some absurdly pointless things and leave out what I think are important details. I need to get over that before we finish all of the movies. Books and movies are always different. Books and movies are always different. They cannot be compared. I'll keep telling myself that. (But I'll also keep telling myself that books are infinitely better!)

Josh's Baptism

Joshua's never really known much of his extended family. Two years ago Joshua was able to visit and participate in the baby blessing of the youngest daughter of Joshua's cousin, Chaz. We thought that was pretty special, and Joshua had been thrilled to attend that. Chaz and his family also drove down and attended our wedding. Since then we've been able to spend more time with them. They are wonderful.

Chaz is the cousin who baptized Joshua when he was eight. And last month they invited us to the baptism of Chaz's oldest child, also named Josh. We weren't sure we'd be able to make it down, but long story short...we did!

Joshua and I got a ride down to Salt Lake City where we had time to eat, chat with some really nice sister missionaries, help them chase a baby mouse (in the Visitor's Center! eek!), and check out some of the Visitor's Center. We loved the new temple model:

Erin and Josh picked us up and drove us back to Orem where Chaz and Erin had decided to spoil us and put us in a hotel room for our visit. I won't lie...it was so nice to relax in a hotel room! And since we had a little mini-kitchen we ran across the street to get some food at Win-Co (Ben & Jerry's...yum!).

Saturday morning was Josh's baptism!! Joshua was one of the witnesses and it was so good to be there with them on such a special occasion! Of course I think it's especially neat since Chaz was the one to baptize Joshua back in the day. (And this is the part where I feel absolutely terrible that we didn't think to take a picture of all of them together!)

While the rest of the family headed back to the house for lunch, Chaz, Erin, Josh, Joshua and I headed to Sizzler where they treated us to a wonderful lunch! (They really did spoil us, but I won't complain.)

That afternoon we went back to our hotel room for Joshua to do homework and for me to take a luxurious nap. I really just love sleeping at hotels. They have such fluffy pillows and blankets!

And I just have to say that the bathroom in our hotel room could have been made with me in mind. Painted yellow, with a curved shower curtain rod (those are just fantastic!), and an orange polka-dotted shower curtain! I loved all of it and had to take a picture:

We spent Saturday night getting to play with their kids. Joshua played marbles, video games, and other "boy stuff" with Josh and Zach. I spent my time playing Barbies and other "girl stuff" with Allie. Then Erin took me, Allie, and Zach to go swimming at the hotel pool. We had a blast!! Joshua and Josh stayed at the house and played games. They had lots of fun too!

Sunday was church, hanging out a bit for lunch, and then back to Idaho for Joshua and I. It was a short visit but we sure were glad we could be there for Josh's baptism!

Pinata

I wanted to do something out of the ordinary for Joshua's birthday. So I started to make him a pinata. I did the layers of newspaper around a balloon. We picked out and bought our paint. It was going to be green with blue stripes. That was as far as we ever got. This was in February since his birthday is March 1st.

We thought that our colors would be nice for Easter so we considered finishing it then. However, we still hadn't touched it again when our anniversary rolled around in June. Perfect time to finish it and celebrate, right? Well our anniversary came and went without a trace of our pinata.

My birthday is in August and we finally got serious about our pinata. We painted it! We used the same colors, but since it was for my birthday now, it was green with blue polka dots. We bought yarn to hang it up by. Joshua even bought candy and filled the pinata!! (I'd bought candy for it before his birthday, but of course it didn't hang around long enough to make it into the pinata in August.)

Well, we didn't break the pinata on my birthday. We skillfully managed to get all of the candy out of it without breaking it, and the candy was gone in a couple of days.

Halloween also seemed like a good occasion to break a pinata. Can you guess what happened with it then? Yep. Nothing.

I'm pleased to announce.... we finally broke our pinata!! It almost felt like a part of our family after being around so long. We bought candy for it again on New Year's Eve. That night we stopped by our stake party for a while. Really we just wanted some food. They had plenty of pizza and subs. It was delicious! Then we came home, filled our pinata, and settled in to watch a movie with some good ole beer of the root. Joshua set an alarm for a few minutes before midnight so we could pause our movie. We hooked our pinata up to the broom handle and were ready to break it open after a traditional New Year's Eve midnight kiss. :)

The finished product.

Joshua holding up the pinata for me to whack it!

Blindfolded and ready to break the pinata open!
So I think it was after my second hit that the pinata broke off it's string and fell on the floor. I waved my hanger around for a while but couldn't find it. So we gave up on the blindfold. Joshua and I took turns whacking the pinata until we'd broken it completely open. It was entertaining. I don't think I've laughed that hard in a long time.

Happy New Year everyone!!

Christmas

This Christmas was my first actually feeling like an adult and the reason is kinda ridiculous . . . we woke up and showered before opening presents! That was monumental for me. haha

So Christmas morning we opened all of our presents. We both got the things we wanted and some surprises, which is always happy. :) Here's us and some of our new treasures:

After presents we had a scrumptious breakfast. I had to remind Joshua of the tradition he initiated last year - that he make Christmas breakfast every year. He'd forgotten but was more than happy to oblige me. So we had eggs, bacon, and chocolate chip pancakes. Yum!

My handsome man making breakfast:

Later in the day we talked to some of our family on the phone. Then we headed over to our friends, the Andersons, for dinner and fun! The Seagraves, Twitchells, and some-random-couple-from-out-of-town-that-we-don't-know (that's their real name) were also there. We did a White Elephant exchange, watched YouTube videos, played games, laughed a whole bunch, made people feel awkward, and ate! There was lots of ham, potatoes, rolls (we LOVE Krista's rolls!), and treats! We had a lot of fun!! Honestly, by the end of the day it didn't feel much like Christmas to either of us (hard to define but I think we all know the feeling) but it was still great! Last year it was soo weird for me to not be around family so this year it was good to at least spend Christmas with friends!

O Christmas Tree!

After not having a Christmas tree last year we were both soo excited for a tree this year!! Our problem last year had been that neither of us knew how/cared to take care of a real tree, but we weren't sure where we'd store a fake tree during the rest of the year. This year we decided we needed a tree! So we'd just have to find a place for it. And we found the perfect tree at Walmart. It's a decent size so we can enjoy it, but not so big we have no room for it. Plus, it was pretty cheap.

We couldn't wait any longer and bought our tree a few days before Thanksgiving. I was so anxious we ended up setting it up the day before Thanksgiving! It was my first experience setting up a Christmas tree. And I have to add that Joshua is a master at putting lights on a tree.

We did try to celebrate and give Thanksgiving some of the time it deserves, and didn't decorate our tree until a few days after Thanksgiving.

Our tree on Christmas morning:Having a tree this year made us both very happy.
We enjoyed it until after New Year's!
